A barn was destroyed in a fire Wednesday night near Freeport.

Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner says the Freeport Fire Department and Melrose ambulance assisted deputies in responding to the  fire on a property located in Oak Township, about two miles east of Freeport at just after 11 p.m.

The homeowner noticed the fire when she got home and worked with the fire department put out the flames. The barn was a total loss and 16 calves and 2 goats died in the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
