Driver Gets Away From Deputy After Vehicle Chase In Benton County

A Benton County deputy was lead on an chase Wednesday night near Watab Township.

Benton County Sheriff Troy Heck reports a deputy started following a minivan after observing traffic violations in which the van appeared to be following another car while traveling southbound on Highway 10. The deputy pulled the van over on the exit for Benton County Road 33.

After the deputy approached, the driver, 51-year-old Orville Axelson Jr. of Beloit Wisconsin, told the him that he was driving erratically because he was trying to follow a friend. There was a woman passenger in the van at the time.

The other vehicle pulled over at this time of this incident and the deputy approached it, that's when Axelson tried to flee the scene. The van was located a short time later was pulled over again, however this time Axelson was not in the vehicle. The woman passenger had taken over the wheel after Axelson had leaped out of the moving van.

Axelson has an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Other law enforcement units started a search with two K-9 teams but were unable to locate him. 

The Benton County Sheriff's Office was assisted by local police department units as well as the Minnesota State Patrol.
