Archived: Crime Stoppers Now Taking Anonymous Tips Through Texts

For the first time, mobile phone users can provide anonymous crime tips to the Tri-County Crime Stoppers of Minnesota. The service, called TipSoft, allows people to send anonymous tips online, by iPhone or Android apps or by texting the keyword TRITIP and the tip information to "CRIMES" (274637).

Tri-County Crime Stopper of Minnesota President Alicia Mages says that the widespread use of text messaging makes it easy for the public to help law enforcement agencies fight crime.

TipSoft provides a service that specifically allows text message providers to remain anonymous by encrypting the text messages, assigning them a unique ID, and routing them through secure servers which will protect the personal details of the information provider.

Citizens are asked to use TipSoft to report information about any non-urgent illegal activity, such as unsolved cases, vandalism, theft, the sale and distribution of drugs or information about crimes that are being planned in the community or in schools.
