Archived: Drowning Victim’s Wife Says Her Husband Suffered from PTSD

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) – A Minnesota woman says her military veteran husband was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder when he walked into the Mississippi River never to be seen alive again.

Witnesses told police that 49-year-old Shannon Shaw of Waite Park started to swim across the massive waterway at St. Cloud on Monday afternoon, near the railroad bridge area north of 5th Avenue. They lost sight of him when he was about halfway across.

Authorities found Shaw’s body Tuesday night after using professional sonar technology.

The Star Tribune reports that Kristi Shaw said her husband hadn’t been able to find help for the PTSD that he had struggled with since he served in the U.S. Army’s military police in Germany in the 1990s.

Shaw had been discharged from the emergency room at St. Cloud Hospital just before he entered the river. The hospital hasn’t disclosed what treatment he received.
