Archived: Frostbitten UMD Student Cheers Loud And Proud For Brother At MSHSL Hockey Tournament

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – There’s a special fan cheering in the stands at the state boys’ hockey tournament in St. Paul.

Alyssa Lommel cheered for her brother and his team, St. Cloud Cathedral, when the tournament kicked off Wednesday at the Xcel Energy Center. The 19-year-old Lommel is the University of Minnesota-Duluth student who survived a night in the subzero temperatures last December before she was found unconscious on a neighbor’s porch in Duluth. Lommel lost parts of her hands and feet to frostbite.

Her brother, Leo, tells KARE-TV his sister’s strength has been an inspiration. He says Alyssa is the only girl among his siblings, but is tougher than his older brothers.

Lommel has been recovering at home in St. Cloud since she left the hospital last month.
