The seventeenth annual St. Cloud Juneteenth Celebration is this Friday at Riverside Park. KVSC’s Justus Sanchez has the AUDIO STORY.

Every year St.Cloud community members gather to celebrate and remember the anniversary of freed black slaves in Texas. The slaves in Texas had finally found out they were free between June 13th and June 19th 1865; two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

African American Male Forum of St. Cloud in partnership with many other local organizations has organized the event. Leroy Hill of the forum says the Juneteenth celebration has become a social event. The social aspects of the event are paired with the sharing of resources available to the community.

The Juneteenth celebration features a community talent showcase organized by Forum member Buddy King.

New to this year’s event is a Walkathon for health that is taking place at 5 p.m. at Riverside Park.

The Juneteenth Celebration begins at 6 p.m. at Riverside Park. The Walkathon begins at 5 p.m. prior to the event.
