Archived: Liberty Derrick Demonstration Saturday At Quarry Park

A 100-year-old boulder lifting device will be operated this Saturday at the Quarry Park and Nature Preserve in Stearns County.

The device is called a Liberty Derrick and was a main piece of equipment used to move granite from early 1900s to 1950s. The public will be able to see the Liberty Derrick lift a four-ton block of granite from the quarry at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Observation areas are along Quarries 17 and 18, south of the parking lot. The Stearns County Parks Department began restoring the Lliberty Derrick in 2005 with the help of thousands of dollars in donations.

Once a year the Liberty Derrick is put into use, but it can be viewed anytime in its derrick exhibit at the park.

A video of the Liberty Derrick is available on the Stearns County website.
