Archived: Monticello Nuclear Power Plant In Need Of Improvement

MONTICELLO, Minn. (AP) – A top Nuclear Regulatory Commission official says Xcel Energy needs to work to improve the "degraded" performance of its Monticello nuclear power plant.

Regional administrator Cynthia Pederson tells the Minneapolis Star Tribune that Xcel needs to understand the "depth and breadth" of performance issues and correct them.

Pederson visited Monticello Monday night for an annual regulator meeting for plant workers and the community. She says Monticello is a safe nuclear reactor, but managers need to clean up several examples of improper procedure.

NRC inspectors last June said Monticello wasn’t prepared for worst-case flooding along the Mississippi River. Xcel says it’s fixed that problem by putting dike-building materials at hand in case of a big flood.
