Archived: Northstar Train Collides Into Car Near Downtown Elk River Monday Morning

A mother and her child suffered no injuries after a Northstar commuter train struck their car near downtown Elk River early Monday morning.

According to Metro Transit Police, the train was traveling northbound when it struck the car at Proctor Avenue.

The car then collided with another vehicle and slid onto the tracks. The driver left the car as she was unable to move it. She was also incapable of rescuing her son, who was in a car seat. After the train struck the car, the mother immediately saved the child and went to a nearby business for help.

Police say the train stopped about a quarter-mile from the scene. The mother and child were taken to a medical facility for evaluation and released.
