Archived: Planning Commission Approves Plan for Mosque

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) – St. Cloud’s planning commission has approved a scaled-back plan for a mosque development.

The Islamic Center of St. Cloud wants to build a mosque, school and community space at a site zoned for duplexes and single-family homes.

Responding to neighborhood concerns about the impact on traffic and parking, the planning commission voted 5-2 Tuesday to recommend a two-phase development. It says the mosque and school should be built in the first phase, and the applicant should have to come back for approval from a second phase that would include a third building for a community center and gym and expansion of the mosque and school.

The St. Cloud Times reports the commission’s recommendation will go to the City Council, which will likely hold a public hearing sometime in October.
