Archived: Property Tax Deferral Program

Later in the week notices will be going out to 600 property owners in Stearns County who are affected by the changes to the Green Acres and Rural Preserve property tax programs. The notice reminds landowners they have until 2013 to enroll their grandfathered Green Acres land into the Rural Preserve program.

Class 2b rural vacant land that was grandfathered into Green Acres will no longer qualify for that program beginning the first of next year. By law, choosing to do nothing will cause the rural vacant land to be assessed at a higher valuation and the property owner paying three years of deferred taxes on it.

Property Owners who want to enroll their 2b rural vacant land in the Rural Preserve program can use the materials mailed to them a year ago.  If that information has been misplaced, if the land was put into a qualifying agricultural use, or if there are any other questions call the Stearns County Assessor’s Office at 320-656-3680 or email them at property.assessment@co.stearns.mn.us
