Archived: Real ID Applications Now Open To Minnesota Residents

Minnesota residents can now start applying for Real ID.

Stearns County Auditor-Treasurer Randy Schreifels says residents need to have a Real ID to fly domestically or to cross the Mexican or Canadian border by October 2020. Until then, you’ll be able to use your standard issue driver’s license or ID cards for federal purposes.

Since there’s two years until you need a Real ID, officials suggest people wait to apply unless they’re changing their name or address so it will help ease the transition and reduce wait times for cards.

Schreifels adds residents can buy Real IDs at Stearns County License Centers downtown or at the Service Center but requires additional documentation compared to regular drivers licenses. Most of the additional documents can be attained at county offices.

For any questions, including documentation requirements, go to the State Driver and Vehicle Services Division at dvs.dps.mn.gov, or call them at 651. 284. 1234.
