03/11/2013 - 10:40 AM
The St. Cloud Police Department have obtained a new device that will help officers communicate more easily who those who speak a different language.
The hands free mobile interpretation device called ELSA will provide immediate communication in 180 languages. The unit is about the size of an average cell phone and can be clipped to the officer’s shirt for an easy hands free use. The department has four units that can be used in the police station or taken out into the community.
The unit, created by RTT mobile, also provides a live telephone support line where officers can call and access the same services in the event the device was not brought onto the scene.
The department has had the units in operation for about a week and officers have used them for three different calls for service.
