Archived: SCSU Professor Works On NASA Project

A St. Cloud State University physics professor is part of a team of researchers who have been given a $1 million grant from NASA for the evaluation of potential future missions.

“This is the first hurdle in getting funding for a satellite mission” says SCSU professor and co-creator of the ICON team John Harlander. The mission’s purpose is to understand the extreme variability in the Earth’s ionosphere and how it can interfere with communications and geopositioning signals, both which are national concerns.

The team has 11 months to complete their study which will go on to compete for a chance to be awarded a satellite mission with a budget of around $2 million.
