Archived: St. Cloud Diocese New Bishop Says Its A Time Of Healing

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) – The new head of the Catholic Diocese of St. Cloud says the church must be an instrument of healing.

Bishop Donald Kettler was installed in a Mass on Thursday at the Cathedral of St. Mary. WJON radio reported that Kettler sermonized about his travels around the Diocese of Fairbanks, Alaska, offering apologies for the previous sexual abuse cases involving members of the church.

Kettler spent 32 years as a priest in Sioux Falls, S.D., before being appointed to lead the Fairbanks diocese in 2002. Pope Francis appointed him in September to lead in St. Cloud.

It’s a homecoming for Kettler, who was born in Minneapolis and graduated from St. John’s University in 1970. He replaces Bishop John Kinney, who led the diocese for nearly two decades.
