Early Wednesday morning the St. Cloud Police were called to the intersection of Highway 23 and Lincoln Avenue Southeast for an attempted car theft in progress.
According to the police report, 44-year-old Zachary Tyler Taylor of St. Cloud had allegedly attempted to get into several occupied vehicles. Taylor had run up to a vehicle at a stop light and pulled on the locked door handles while yelling at the occupants. When that vehicle drove off, Taylor ran to the Gateway Motel where he tried to open multiple locked and unoccupied cars and eventually knocked on the doors of multiple rooms where one person opened the door.
Taylor and the occupant got into a physical struggle that led to Taylor grabbing a nearby fire extinguisher and threatening the victim. Taylor then sprayed the fire extinguisher at an officer who attempted to take Taylor into custody. The officer was taken and released from the St. Cloud Hospital for exposure to the fire extinguisher chemical. Taylor was also treated and released from the St. Cloud Hospital for minor injuries.
Taylor was taken to the Benton County jail where he is being held for court on several charges including felony assault, burglary and attempted robbery.
St. Cloud Police are looking for the driver or the occupants of the dark colored sedan stopped at the light in the East bound lane of Highway 23 at Lincoln Avenue when Taylor tried to open their doors.
