Archived: St. Cloud State Students Uncover Artifacts At Wildlife Refuge

A group of students have discovered artifacts from a time up to 1,000 years ago during a field study.

St. Cloud State University says that excavation units working at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge have dug up several artifacts from earlier occupants of the area. Some of the artifacts included a shard of pottery with design elements from the original pot and obsidian that was brought to Central Minnesota from trading.

The excavation is run by a dozen St. Cloud State University anthropology students, led by Professor Mark Muñiz. The university is partnering with the wildlife refuge to learn more about the area’s past occupants. The site was included as part of the 2018 summer session field study.

This is the 50th year of the St. Cloud State archaeological field school’s existence.
