Archived: The Wait Is Over! Building 51 Has Been Renamed To Ruby Cora Webster Hall

A building on St. Cloud State University’s campus will get a new name after a months long, rigorous process.

University Communications spokeswoman Anna Kurth says the 51 Building will change to Ruby Cora Webster Hall, after the 1909 graduate from St. Cloud Normal School. Webster was a teacher and was a significant individual in the region’s history.

The name change process started in 2017 when Ethnic Studies professor Christopher Lehman proposed the renaming. Lehman discussed with Untold Stories of Central Minnesota Producer Jeff Carmack the importance of Webster and what the change would mean. It then came up to the administration to develop a non-donor related naming policy for the campus.

Minnesota State Chancellor Devinder Malhotra approved the renaming, and it will be put in place for the school’s sesquicentennial.

At one time in the school’s recent history, Building 51 was known as the Business Building, before that program moved to Centennial Hall and became the Herberger School of Business.
