Archived: Two Men Are Facing First Degree Assault Charges After A Shooting In St. Augusta

Two men have been identified in the St. Augusta home shooting and are facing charges of first Degree Assault.

Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner says, 30-year-old Erik James Magnuson of St. Cloud and 21-year-old Jerod Roger Jakel of Sauk Rapids drove to an address in St. Augusta last Wednesday morning to get money that was owed to them. While Magnuson stayed in the vehicle, Jakel went into the home wearing a bandanna over his face with a handgun. Jakel struggled to control the handgun, and it discharged striking the victim in the abdomen. The victim was later treated for non-life threatening injuries by emergency medical personnel and taken to the St. Cloud Hospital.

Witnesses in the home called 911 and accurately provided a description of the vehicle and the two suspects. Deputies later stopped the matched vehicle near College Avenue South in St. Joseph. In the car, investigators found an empty holster, a sawed-off shotgun, suspected methamphetamine and a bandanna.

Both Jakel and Magunson confessed to their involvement in the incident and also of throwing the weapon used out of the car window. The men told deputies the area where the gun was tossed and it was later found submerged in water in a roadside ditch in St. Joseph Township.

More evidence was gathered at the St. Augusta home after a search warrant was executed. Additional charges are possible depending on results of the continuing investigation.
