DULUTH, Minn. (AP) – The mother of a University of Minnesota Duluth student who nearly froze to death last month says her daughter is recovering from surgery on her frostbitten feet.

Teri Lommel writes that her daughter, Alyssa, lost only the tips of her toes on one foot, which should help with balance and walking and the other foot was amputated just below the ball of the foot. Lommel says on Alyssa’s CaringBridge website that surgeons also removed skin and tissue from her heels at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

The 19-year-old St. Cloud woman suffered severe frostbite and hypothermia after a night outdoors in Duluth when temperatures dropped to minus-17. Her friends dropped her off at her house but she never made it inside. She was found nine hours later on the porch of a home next door.
