Archived: Walleye Fishing Closing On Mille Lacs Lake Until July 28

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Walleye fishing on Mille Lacs Lake will close for three weeks as fisheries managers try to revive its walleye population.

But the lake remains open for other species. A spokesman says Gov. Mark Dayton will go bass fishing there this weekend for the second time this season. Mille Lacs was recently named the No. 1 bass lake in the nation by Bassmaster. With a ban on night fishing already in place, walleye angling on the lake effectively closes at 10:01 p.m. Thursday, and reopens at 6:01 a.m. Friday, July 28.

The closure is meant to prevent walleyes from dying after being caught and released, a tendency called hooking mortality that increases in warm weather. Dayton spokesman Sam Fettig says the governor will fish Saturday out of Fisher’s Resort near Isle.
