Athletics Meeting Draws Many Looking For Answers
08/31/2010 - 10:00 AM
St. Cloud State fans, boosters, coaches and athletes came out in full-force Monday night seeking answers on the future state of St. Cloud State sports at the informal “Support Husky Athletics” meeting. Several hundred people in attendance made it a standing room only crowd at the Holiday Inn that reached the hallways.
President Earl Potter started the night with a presentation showing why the university is facing a major $500,000 budget deficit in 2012 and why cutting a major sport like football is up for consideration. Three proposals have been brought forth to help solve the deficit, including two that would eliminate football, and one that would cut eight sports and keep football. The football team lost nearly $825,000 in 2008-09 and was among every sport except Men’s Hockey in losing money during that year.
Potter was faced with many tough questions during the Q&A session following the presentation. Football fans and parents were the most vocal.
Student Government President Amanda Bardonner also spoke at the event and stated the Student Government was getting involved and would look into a vote increasing the per credit fee that would directly benefit athletics.
Potter stated the next piece of the puzzle was the September 20 meeting with the NSIC to determine if the league will waive the requirement that league members are required to have a football team.
You can hear from Potter and Kurtz, as well as audio from the last night’s event at 12:30 P.M. today meeting during our Noon Newswatch feature. This will be the first piece of a two part feature, and the second half will air Wednesday at 12:30 P.M.
