Football Team Drops Opener to Augustana, 32-23

The St. Cloud State football team held a 23-14 lead mid-way through their contest Saturday, but a late push by Augustana gave the Vikings a 32-23 victory in the opening game of the season at Kirkeby-Over Stadium in Sioux Falls.
The St. Cloud offense had their bright moments under new quarterback Phillip Klaphake who threw for 319 yards and a touchdown. The first year QB hooked up with veteran receiver Fred Williams for a 60 yard touchdown. Williams set a St. Cloud record for receiving yards in a single game with 236 on his 12 catches. The mark broke the record of 228 yards set by Mike McKinney in 1998.
Despite offensive success, St. Cloud struggled on the defensive side of the ball late.The Vikings notched 18 consecutive points in the game’s final 7:41 to turn the tables on the Huskies. Receiver Tyler Schulte lead the way for the Vikings with two touchdowns.
The Huskies fall to 0-1 and will look to rebound this Saturday as they are on the road against Concordia St. Paul. Kick-off is slated for 6 P.M. The following week the Huskies open their season at home with a conest against Winona State on September 18 at 6 P.M.
