09/21/2009 - 10:22 AM
An explosion on offense and solid defensive play helped the Saint Cloud State football team win its first game of the season, 28-17 on Saturday against Northern State. SCSU gained 556 yards of total offense as they mixed it up between the run and the pass. Husky running backs Brandon Geiss and Jake Machacek ran wild on the Wolves defense, rushing for 188 and 89 yards respectively. Machacek added two one yard touchdown runs on the day.
SCSU quarterback Mitch Watkins completed his first 13 passes en route to a 21 of 28, 258 yard and two touchdown performance. Watkins' two favorite targets on the day were Fred Williams and Tyler Nuquay, who each had eight catches. Nuquay also scored his second career touchdown as a Husky. SCSU is now 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Northern Sun Conference and travels to Upper Iowa on September 26th to face off against the Peacocks.
