Frozen Four Frenzy
04/03/2013 - 3:00 AM
The men’s hockey team continues to write history this season as they gear up to participate in the NCAA Frozen Four. SCSU will play Quinnipiac next Thursday at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh. The Huskies are just two wins away from a national title. KVSC will be there as well to provide all the action on 88.1 FM and online. Our coverage will begin a half hour prior to puck drop, at 6:30 p.m. central time. The Huskies have been swamped with a frenzy of media this week surrounding their first appearance in the Frozen Four and a variety of awards.
Senior, Co-Captain Drew LeBlanc has been named a Hobey Hat Trick Finalist. The Hobey Baker Award is given to a player that exhibits strength and character on and off the ice. LeBlanc is the second Husky to make the final three, the other was Mark Hartigan in 2002. The award winner will be announced on April 12 during the awards ceremony in Pittsburgh at the Frozen Four.
More awards for the men’s team include Nick Jensen and Jonny Brodzinski honored by College Hockey News. Jensen earned First Team honors at defense and ranks second in the nation among defenders with 27 assists. Brodzinski made the All-Rookie Team, he leads the Huskies with most goals scored this season with 22. That's also the most of any rookie in the nation.
Head coach Bob Motzko is also a finalist for the Spencer Penrose award. That award is given to the NCAA Division One Coach of the Year. Motzko is one of seven finalists after leading the Huskies to the program's first Frozen Four with a 25-15-4 overall record. The award winner will be announced Wednesday, April 10.
