The State Cloud State women’s hockey team hosted the University of Wisconsin over the weekend. State Cloud State is in search for points in the WHCA as they currently sit in last place. On Friday afternoon the Badgers got on the board first, netting a goal midway through the opening period on the power play. Shortly after, Wisconsin got on the board again, this time on a shot from the blue line, giving the Badgers a 2-0 edge. Wisconsin added another goal near the end of the opening period and skated into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead. The rest of the contest would be more of the same as the Badgers scored three more times to defeat the Huskies 6-0. SCSU Sophomore net minder Julie Friend faced 41 shots and turning away 35. Sophomore defender Audrey Hanmer blasted 10 total shots on net for the Huskies but unable to get one past Wisconsin goaltender, Alex Rigsby. The win will keep Wisconsin in contention for the number two spot in the WHCA behind Minnesota and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. The Huskies were shut out for the second consecutive game and have not scored in the past seven periods. The last time the Huskies scored a goal was the second period against UND on January 25th, 2013.
In game two, the Huskies scored the game’s first goal, snapping the seven period scoreless stretch. Senior, Alex Nelson notched her ninth of the season. Haylea Schmid and Michelle Burke added the assists on the goal around the three-minute mark in period one. SCSU held onto the lead until the 12:30 mark in the opening period. Wisconsin tied the game at 1-1 on a power play as Karley Sylvester found the net for the ninth time of the season. The teams would enter the first intermission knotted at one. The Huskies fell into trouble by causing trouble on the ice. The Huskies were penalized a total of seven times in the game giving Wisconsin six power play chances. The Badgers used those to their advantage scoring on three of them en route to a 5-1 defeat of the Huskies at the NHEC. With the weekend sweep, the Badgers remain in contention for the number spot in the WHCA. The loss keeps the Huskies in the WHCA basement with only 13 points. SCSU will be back in action this weekend for the final road trip of the regular season as they travel to Mankato to face Minnesota State.
