A long-awaited even took place at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul over the weekend. The first North Star College Cup, featuring the Division I hockey programs in Minnesota. Each year four of the five teams in Minnesota will compete for the hand-crafted trophy (and bragging rights) to prove they are the best college team in the State of Hockey. The University of Minnesota is the permanent host of the event and will play in the tournament each year. St. Cloud State, Minnesota State Moorhead and Minnesota Duluth were also present this year. The Huskies will sit out next year's North Star College Cup.
The tournament started off with a game between Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth. It was a pinball, back and forth battle that took extra time to settle. After regulation the game was tied 4-4. Minnesota Duluth prevailed during overtime to win and advance to the Championship game Saturday night. Minnesota State would play in the consolation game Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
The Husky men's hockey team played the top team in the nation, the Golden Gophers, Friday night. The winner would advance to the Championship game Saturday night and play the winner of the earlier game (Duluth). SCSU kept things close the entire game but was unable to answer two Minnesota power play goals (2/2 on the night) and an empty net goal. The Huskies fell 4-1.
Saturday the Huskies played in the cosolation game of the North Star College Cup against Minnesota State Mankato. The Huskies handled the Mavericks winning 6-4. Thanks to a pair of Jonny Brodzinski goals, Nic Dowd, Cory Thorson, David Morley and Kalle Kossila also scored in the victory.
SCSU sophomore forward Jonny Brodzinski has been named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Offensive Player of the Week. Brodzinski scored three goals and set up another during play at the North Star College Cup for a total of four points. He extended his point streak to seven games and leads the Huskies in goals scored this season with 14. Next up, Brodzinski and the rest of the Huskies will travel to Omaha, NE to take on the University Nebraska-Omaha Friday and Saturday night. Listen to the action on 88.1 FM KVSC or online.
