Huskies Hunker Down at Home
01/30/2013 - 11:30 AM
The St. Cloud State women’s hockey team will be on a much-needed bye this week. Last weekend the Huskies were swept at home by the #10 ranked University of North Dakota at the National Hockey and Event Center. The Huskies haven't won since they hosted Bemidji State University at the NHEC on Friday, January 4th of this year. They did earn a tie on the road versus Ohio State on January 18th.
The Huskies have three more series left in the regular season starting with next weekend's series at home versus the University of Wisconsin followed by at road trip to Minnesota State-Mankato and ending with a home series with the top-ranked team in the country, the University of Minnesota.
SCSU is currently in a tie with Bemidji State for the bottom spot in the WHCA standings. The Huskies will have the last six games remaining to get out of the bottom spot and avoid opening the post-season with the Golden Gophers, a team that has been on a terror since the first puck drop of the season. The Huskies will not have any chance at home ice in the postseason but can still climb into the number six spot pitting them versus Minnesota-Duluth or Wisconsin.
The Huskies are led by junior forward Molli Mott who leads the team with 9 goals and is tied for the team lead in assists with 12. Overall, Mott leads SCSU in scoring with 21 points. She is followed by seniors Alex Nelson (20 points) and Haylea Schmid (19 points) as the team leaders with sophomore defender Audrey Hanmer helping out with her finest season, chipping in a total of 15 total points. The Huskies will need more help in the scoring column to make a run in the standings. The Huskies eight wins on the season has already surpassed their total of five wins a year ago and goaltenders Julie Friend and Katie Fitzgerald give the Huskies a chance to be competitive in every series.
KVSC will air the Wisconsin series on our Sports Stream next Friday afternoon and Saturday as a part of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. KVSC Sports will also provide coverage of the Minnesota series on 88.1 FM.
