The St. Cloud State men’s basketball team split at home last weekend, falling in a nail biter to cross-town rival St. John’s 83-80 and defeating Mayville State 88-73.

Scottie Stone got his groove back immediately against St. John’s putting up 22 shots, 11 of them coming from beyond the arc en route to recording 24 points in the loss.

As a team the Huskies hit 50% from the field and drained 7 three pointers, but allowed the Johnnies to connect on 59% of their shots, which turned out to be too much to overcome.

The Huskies responded to Friday’s loss well on Saturday by dominating the first half against Mayville State. They held a 45-31 lead at intermission while shooting 48% from the field and out-rebounded Mayville 23-15.

The second half was much more competitive. St. Cloud State would go up by 21 points midway through the period, but Mayville came storming back and got within 4 points of the Huskies with 4 minutes remaining. Scottie Stone and Gage Davis would close the door on the Comets with three, threes over the next couple minutes to extend the Huskies lead to 13 at 84-71.

St. Cloud State eventually won by a final of 88-73 to pick up their first victory of the season.

The Huskies host Northland College at Halenbeck Hall on this Tuesday at 7 p.m.
