Huskies Sweep UND
01/17/2010 - 10:30 AM
Friday's game one saw the Huskies do something they haven't been able to do a lot this year, come back and win after falling behind early. UND's Ashley Furia scored early in the 2nd period to put Nodak up by one; but the Huskies answered back halfway through the period when senior captain Felicia Nelson was forced a turnover and put the puck five-hole on UND goalie Jorid Dogfinrud. Less than six minutes later, SCSU first year defense Lisa Martinson fired a wrist shot from the high point on the power play into the back of the net for her first career goal. That gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead and they would hold onto it winning by the same score.
Game two was just as exciting as another freshman, Alex Nelson, scored for SCSU giving the Huskies an early lead at the Ralph Englestad Arena. Nelson's power play goal was her second of the season. North Dakota would come back to tie it as a freshman of their own, Holly Perkins, was able to put a wrist shot past Husky goalie Ashley Nixon. After five scoreless minutes of OT, the teams would go to a shootout. Nixon stopped all four UND shooters and Caitlin Hogan netted the winner in the shootout to complete the sweep. SCSU is now 9-10-5 overall and 6-9-3-2 in the WCHA. The Huskies will head to the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin this weekend to take on the Badgers. Game time for both games is 2:07 pm and they can be heard online at kvsc.org with Matt Bishop having the call.
