KVSC on the Big Stage
03/24/2013 - 6:00 AM
Over the weekend KVSC did something they had never done before, broadcast every game of the WCHA Final Five Tournament from the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. KVSC entered the Al Shaver Press Box with WCHA.com and Fox Sports North in providing coverage of the event. KVSC covered the St Cloud State men's hockey game Friday afternoon live on 88.1 FM and all the other games on the KVSC Sports Stream. "I felt it was important to be a part of it" KVSC Co-Sports Director Scott Gross stated, "We had the credentials and the man power to do something no one else did before us. It gave our student announcers a chance to cut their teeth if they wanted to, to cover a historic event in the final year as we know it." The current WCHA will disband into three conferences next year.
Wisconsin won the tournament and the Broadmoor Trophy for the first time since 1998 by defeating Colorado College 3-2 on Saturday night. Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota will leave the WCHA after this season to join the new Big 10 conference. St Cloud State along with Colorado College, Denver, North Dakota, Duluth and Nebraska-Omaha will leave for the NCHC.
"We got to do a lot of things no one ever though we could, or dared." Gross said, "We have so many possibilities with the sports stream and we used it to our advantage. We interviewed coaches from other colleges and attended press conferences just like the big boys. I want to personally thank Jim Gray and Jo McMullen for the green light to cover this along with our dedicated staff including Co-Sports Director Gina Carlson, Bryan Kangas, Casey Mosich and Declan Goff. We've got some sports crazies down here in the basement of Stewart Hall and with people like that, there is no telling what our future holds."
