Men's Hockey Splits at Maverick Stampede

The St. Cloud State men’s hockey team got mixed results this weekend at the Maverick Stampede tournament in Omaha, Nebraska. The #4 Huskies beat #18 RIT on Friday by a score of 3-1, but were outplayed in Saturday’s 6-2 loss to Clarkson.

Friday’s game saw Mike Lee start for St. Cloud State, and the sophomore goalie was sharp for the Huskies. The game was knotted at zero until the Huskies got a goal from senior forward Nick Oslund at the 13:43 mark of the second period to make it 1-0. R-I-T tied the game in the third, but Ben Hanowski  responded with a goal for St. Cloud, and Travis Novak added an empty net goal to give St. Cloud the win. Lee finished with 26 saves.

Saturday the Huskies again saw the game remain scoreless until the second period, but in only a matter of minutes, things fell apart against Clarkson. The Golden Knights scored just over five minutes into the period to make it 1-0. Clarkson would not be finished and would add three more goals in just a span of minutes to make it 4-0. Senior goalie Dan Dunn was pulled in favor of Lee, and the Huskies responded with goals from Tony Mosey and Hanowski to cut the lead in half. Clarkson however put the game away in the third with two late tallies.

Host school Nebraska-Omaha won the tournament with wins over RIT and Clarkson. St. Cloud State returns home this weekend for a pair of games versus #3 Miami-Ohio. Puck drop is 7:07 both Friday and Saturday, and you can hear both games right here on KVSC.
