The Husky men’s hockey team posted their first sweep of the season at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center over the Bulldogs this weekend. SCSU defeated Minnesota Duluth 5-3 on Friday then finished the weekend with a close 4-3 victory on Saturday night.

On Friday the Huskies got out of the gate early scoring four goals in the first period against the NCHC Goaltender of the Week, Aaron Crandall. The Huskies took advantage of a power play chance early in the game when Nic Dowd scored at the 2:03 mark to make it a 1-0 game. Other goals in the period came off the sticks of Joey Benik, Kevin Gravel and Jimmy Murray. SCSU held the lead 4-0 after the first period. The second period featured UMD swapping goaltenders, putting in Matt McNeely and then starting off on the score sheet, just 22 seconds after the faceoff to slash SCSU's lead to 4-1. The Bulldogs would add another goal before the buzzer signaled the end of the second period. The third period was all St. Cloud State as the Huskies added to their 4-2 lead 39 seconds in when Murray scored his second goal of the game. Austin Farley would make it a 5-3 game with about three minutes left. UMD pulled their goaltender in hopes of magic but the Huskies held on for the win.

On Saturday night things teams seemed to be more evenly matched, trading goals before the Huskies scored late for the eventual victory. Much like game one of the series, SCSU got on the scoreboard early when Murray notched his third goal of the weekend 30 seconds into the game. The Huskies held a 1-0 lead until late in the period when the Bulldogs scored to make it a 1-1 game heading into intermission. In the second period Ethan Prow extended his point streak to seven goals with a goal that made it 2-1. Five minutes later Ryan Papa added to the lead now a 3-1 game. The Bulldogs were not going to give up as easily as Friday and came back in the period to make it a one-goal game. It was 3-2 after two periods. In the third UMD scored on the power play about five minutes into the game thanks to a five on three advantage. The Bulldogs would continue to get opportunities as the teams skated up and down the rink with a 3-3 mark on the scoreboard. Ryan Faragher stood tall between the pipes for the Huskies making every save that came his direction. With less than two minutes to play SCSU's sophomore sensation, Jonny Brodzinski netted a goal that put the Huskies up 4-3. The nail biting continued at the final minute and a half played out, SCSU once again held on for the victory and earned their first home sweep of the season.

Of note in the series, sophomore Jimmy Murray scored three goals, Ethan Prow had a goal and an assist to stretch his point-streak to seven games. David Morley also has a seven game point-streak thanks to his helpers both nights, Morley had two assists on the weekend. Nic Dowd added a goal and two assists on the weekend to extend his point streak to five games. Goaltender Ryan Faragher notched his 48th career victory on Saturday night, he is now second in the record book for the most wins in a career. The only person ahead of him is Brian Leitza who has 66 victories. The Bulldogs continue their ways in St. Cloud, MN where they have not won a game since March 9, 2011.

Just three weekends of regular season play remain and the Huskies currently own the top stop in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) with 36 points. The upcoming weekend will feature the Huskies visiting Miami (OH) who currently sits in the last conference spot.
