The SCSU men’s hockey team opened up the season with a pair of non-conference games against Bemidji State.
The Huskies hit the series off on a good note with a power play goal by sophomore Joey Benik early in Friday’s game. Benik scored another goal in the second period before the Beavers tied things up 2-2. The second frame would see no more scoring. Senior captain Nic Dowd scored a short-handed goal to make the score 3-2 about five minutes into the third period. His goal was the eventual game winner as the Huskies earned their first victory of the season 3-2.
Saturday’s showcase was a bit more of a challenge for SCSU as Bemidji took a 2-0 lead through the first two periods. It wasn’t until the third period that the Huskies got on the scoreboard. Both captains, Kevin Gravel and Nic Dowd scored for SCSU to make the score 2-2. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie.
The game went onto overtime without a winner before entering a shootout. Bemidji State prevailed 3-2 in the shoot out. Since the game was a non-conference match up it’s recorded as a tie for both teams. The men’s team has the upcoming weekend off.
SCSU's Kevin Gravel was named the first NCHC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance during the Bemidji State Series. Nic Dowd was also nominated as the Offensive Player of the Week. The NCHC Fan of the Week also belongs to SCSU as Jeremy Larson won the honor for his photo submission.
The Huskies fall into 11th place in USCHO polls this week.
