SCSU Volleyball Wins Home Opener
09/27/2010 - 1:00 AM
What’s the best way a team can start their home schedule? How about going undefeated? That’s exactly what the St. Cloud State volleyball team did this weekend as they took down Minnesota-State Moorhead and Minnesota-Crookston at Halenbeck Hall.
The Huskies started the weekend off right with a 3-1 win over Moorhead on Friday night in the home opener. Junior Erica Beacom had a career match, posting 13 kills in the four set victory. Beacom was helped out defensively by SCSU junior libero Chelsea Nagle. The defensive-specialist posted a personal season-best 26 digs in the victory.
SCSU kept its hot play going on Saturday, cruising past the Golden Eagles of Crookston in three sets. Sophomore outside-hitter Lauren Cipperly recorded her fourth double-double of the season as she notched 11 kills and 14 digs. Tri-captain setter Jen Waterman had a match-high 34 set assists in the win as well.
The Huskies are 9-4 on the year and 4-1 in NSIC play. The last time SCSU had just one loss through their first five conference matches was in 1995 when they started their then North Central Conference season 4-1. St. Cloud will have their work cut out for them next weekend as they head down to St. Paul to take on the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears. Concordia has won the national championship three years in a row.
