SCSU wins Inugural Penrose Cup
The Julie and Spencer Penrose Cup

The St. Cloud State men’s hockey team swept their final regular season series against Colorado College over the weekend and have earned some hardware for the trophy case. SCSU got help from around the league as well as Western Michigan defeated North Dakota. Leaving it in the Huskies hands to claim the inaugural Penrose Cup all to themselves Saturday night. The Huskies earned the Penrose Cup as a reward for the regular season championship. It's the Huskies first time winning back-to-back league titles, SCSU won the MacNaughton Cup after finishing first in the WCHA last season. The first NCHC season closes out with the Huskies on top the charts with 48 points, the University of North Dakota finished in second play with 45 points.

The Huskies defeated the Tigers 7-4 on Friday night scoring three goals in both the second and third period. However, despite the number of goals it wasn't a snoozer of a game. Colorado College and St. Cloud State kept things interesting until late. The Tigers struck first in the game, scoring just two minutes in but not even two minutes later Joey Benik made it 1-1 with a SCSU goal. The second period would feature three SCSU goals to make it a 4-1 game. The Huskies had two goals from Jonny Brodzinski and another by Kevin Gravel before the Tigers made things exciting by scoring a trio of goals. Joey Benik netted a power play goal just before the end of the period to give the Huskies a narrow 5-4 lead. In the third period of play the Huskies meant business scoring two more times from the hands of Jimmy Murray and Jonny Brodzinski. Goaltender Ryan Faragher clung tight in net and the Huskies won 7-4. Sophomore, Jonny Brodzinski scored three goals in the game, earning his first career hat trick.

On Saturday night the Huskies showed the Tigers that they had something to prove (and something on the line) vying for the league title. SCSU picked up where they left off as Kalle Kossila notched a goal just under four minutes into play. Jimmy Murray would add his second goal of the weekend before the first period would come to a close. In the middle frame, Nic Dowd and Jonny Brodzinski added to the tally each scoring a goal making it 4-0 after two periods of play. This is about the same time of the evening that North Dakota had fallen to Western Michigan, thus, leaving the Huskies to decide their own fate for the NCHC title. Heading into the night SCSU and UND were tied in first place, so St. Cloud needed just one point to break the tie and have the title to themselves. The Huskies successful complete the task allowing one Tiger goal in the third and skating to a 4-1 victory. Following the game the Huskies were presented with the Penrose Cup in the locker room.

#1 SCSU will host #8 Miami University in the first round of NCHC playoffs this upcoming weekend at the Brooks Center, it's a best of three series. The winner of the series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff March 21-22 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. Listen to the games on 88.1 FM KVSC and online here. Friday's coverage begins at 7:00 p.m. and the puck drops at 7:37 p.m. Saturday (and Sunday, if needed) coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. with a 7:07 p.m. game start.
