SCSU Men's Hockey Sweeps On The Road At University of North Dakota
11/03/2013 - 1:15 AM
The SCSU men’s hockey team has completed their second sweep of the season after spending the weekend in Grand Forks, ND to take on NCHC rival the University of North Dakota. It’s the second road sweep in a row for the team, who has not lost yet this season.
The Huskies were forced to come from behind in both games to earn six conference points and leave North Dakota with two wins. It’s the first time since January 27-28, 2006 that SCSU escaped Grand Forks with two victories. The series also marked the Huskies first experience in the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
UND’s Drake Caggiula had netted the games first goal Friday at the 3:10 mark of the first period. It wasn’t until the third period that another puck would solve a goaltender. It was SCSU’s Kevin Gravel sending one past UND goalie Zane Gothberg. It was Gravel’s second goal of the season, already doubling the number of goals he posted last season. Less than two minutes later Kalle Kossila netted a goal to give SCSU a 2-1 lead. The party wasn’t over at the 12:36 mark another SCSU defender would score. Andrew Prochno scored his first goal of the season to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead. With just under five minutes to play UND would strike again to make it a one-goal game. The Huskies clung to their 3-2 lead until the final buzzer and earned the school’s first NCHC victory.
Saturday’s contest played out in a similar fashion with North Dakota on the board first in the opening frame. It was the only special teams goal of the weekend as Nick Mattson solved Ryan Faragher with less than two minutes to play in the first period. The Huskies came to play in the second period netting a pair of goals just 12 seconds apart. It was Tim Daly first with his first of the season, then 12 seconds later Nic Dowd would score his fourth of the season to give SCSU the 2-1 lead. Kalle Kossila would score his second goal of the weekend and boost the Huskies to a 3-1 lead at the 9:35 mark of the third period. The trio of goals was once again enough to extinguish a fiery UND squad.
Ryan Faragher allowed just three goals over the weekend, just one of them was even strength. He is now 6-3-1 against the University of North Dakota in his career. Faragher stopped 45 shots this weekend and has been named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Goaltender of the Week.
The Huskies tallied six conference points and now sit in a three-way tie for the top conference spot. SCSU will host Miami University in more NCHC play in the upcoming weekend series.
