St Cloud State Men's Hockey Opens Regular Season

The St. Cloud State men’s hockey team opened their regular season in Anchorage, Alaska over the weekend. The huskies participated in the Kendall Hockey Classic with; The University of Alaska-Anchorage, The University of Alaska-Fairbanks and the University of Arizona. On Friday against Alaska-Anchorage St Cloud got off to a hot start with two goals from Joey Benik and Blake Winiecki. Goaltender Charlie Lindgrin and the St. Cloud defense was superb allowing just 14 shots on net through all three periods. Judd Peterson capped off the scoring with a third period goal and St Cloud cruised to a 3-0 victory

On Saturday the same success carried over from the previous night with the Huskies getting off to another hot start with three goals in the first period against Alaska-Fairbanks. Freshman Robby Jackson who was scratched on Friday night, responded with two of those goals in the first period. Alaska-Fairbanks made it a one-goal game in the second period after netting two second period goals. But the success of the power play for St Cloud State proved to be too much for Fairbanks with the Huskies getting three goals in the third period, two of them on the power play. With the wins St Cloud finished first place in the tournament and captured the Kendall Hockey Classic trophy.

The men’s hockey team is 2-0 in the regular season and return home to the Herb Brooks National Hockey and Event Center this weekend to host Minnesota State-Mankato. Puck drop on Friday is at 7:37 and 7:07 on Saturday. Both games can be heard 88.1FM-KVSC.
