Toor's Late Goal Propels SCSU Women's Hockey to 4-3 Win Over Ohio State

Brittany Toor's goal with only 5:40 to play in the third period lifted the St. Cloud State Women's Hockey team to an upset win over the Ohio State Buckeyes, 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the National Hockey Center.
With the game tied at three and the clock winding down, Toor accepted a pass from Abby Ness and dashed into the Ohio State zone before sliding a backhander low along the ice under the pad of goaltender Chelsea Knapp to give the Huskies the lead. It was Toor's third career game winning goal, and career best 11th point of the season.
"Abby just gave me a pass, I walked it around and just threw it on the net and actually, I was really surprised that it went in," Toor said.
After dropping game one of the series 2-0 Friday, the Huskies came out flying on Saturday charting three goals in the first period and chasing starting goaltender Lisa Steffes from the game. Senior Jaclyn Daggit, playing at forward with team captain Jocelyn Zabrick out with a hip injury, opened the scoring with her first goal of the season. Molli Mott added her team leading seventh goal on a play setup by Toor, and Alex Nelson's individual play resulted in a goal and 3-0 lead. The last time SCSU scored three goals in a period was in a 6-3 win over Minnesota on February 13, 2010.
Despite being shorthanded with three players participating in the Meco Cup in Germany, the Buckeyes roared back with three straight goals, including the tying goal in the third period from Natalie Spooner. With her third goal of the weekend, Spooner set the Ohio State record for goals with her 87th career tally.
However St. Cloud freshmen goalie Julie Friend was strong, earning her third win of the season kicking aside 41 shots including 18 in the second period to preserve the win.
With the victory, St. Cloud State moves to 3-17-2 on the season and 2-14-0 in the WCHA.
"Obviously with a bad year last year its nice to triple our win total already," Toor said.
Of note, all three of SCSU's wins have come on Saturday afternoons. The Huskies return to action on the road at Minnesota State for a series with the Mavericks on Friday and Saturday. KVSC will have updates via our Twitter page. Follow @KVSCHockey.
