UMD Routes SCSU Women's Hockey, Earns Sweep

A trip north to Duluth was none to kind for the St. Cloud State Women’s Hockey team this past weekend. The UMD Bulldogs swept the Huskies back to St. Cloud, beating SCSU 5-1 Friday, and 10-2 Saturday from Amsoil Arena.
Despite outplaying the Bulldogs early in the Friday’s game, SCSU trailed 1-0 in the second period when Wayne State transfer Cari Coen scored her first goal as a Husky to tie the game. She was assisted by Abby Ness and Molli Mott on the third goal of her career. That would be the only goal SCSU would score as the Bulldogs notched the next four goals en route to the 5-1 win.
Saturday’s game saw Duluth totally dominate St. Cloud State. Before the Huskies got a Julia Gilbert goal in the second, they already trailed by six goals. After two periods of play, UMD lead 10-1, and the Bulldog’s Haley Irwin had seven points. St. Cloud got the final goal on a tip off a Brittany Toor deflection, but the Bulldog’s easily took care of the Huskies and earned the sweep.
St. Cloud is now 1-15-2 on the season and still winless in the WCHA. They will have a chance to change that this weekend when they return home in conference play against Minnesota State-Mankato. MSU was the only team SCSU beat last season. Friday’s game is slated for 7:07 and Saturday’s for 2:07.
