Women Earn Win and Tie in Duluth
11/03/2013 - 12:45 PM
The St. Cloud State University women’s hockey team hit the road again this weekend for a WCHA series with the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth. The Huskies were hungry for more conference points and fed the void taking home four of six points.
The Huskies got the weekend started Friday night in the second period as Julia Gilbert netted a goal just as the Husky power play expired to make the score 1-0. Before the buzzer in the second has ended the Huskies scored three more goals to make the tally 4-0.
Early in the third period the Bulldogs scored to make it 4-1 but SCSU battled on. The Huskies goaltender Julie Friend was solid between the pipes and helped SCSU skate to a 4-1 victory and earns three WCHA points. Friend made 52 saves in the victory and has earned the title of Defensive Player of the Week by the WCHA.
Saturday’s game was a closer contest with no score after one period of play. The second period would see a surge in special team action. The Bulldogs scored with the advantage to make it a 1-0 game. The Huskies were unable to capitalize on multiple chances before the horn sounded for intermission.
The third period was much like the previous two featuring back and forth play. It wasn’t until the 19:38 mark that the Huskies, Julia Gilbert would score. Gilbert’s goal ruined the Bulldogs hope of a regulation victory with 22 seconds left. The game went through overtime without a winner. Minnesota Duluth prevailed in the shoot out to earn the extra conference point.
With the successful weekend the women’s team is now 1-6-3 overall on the season with a 1-5-2 conference record. They host the University of Minnesota this weekend in a pair of games.
