Don’t look now-the St. Cloud State Women’s Hockey team is on a roll. The Huskies captured a pair of WCHA wins this past weekend, sweeping Minnesota State-Mankato on the road by scores of 4-2 Friday and 3-1 Saturday. The Huskies have now won their last three games and moved out of last place in the WCHA.
Friday saw St. Cloud holding a 2-0 lead going into the game’s final frame with goals from junior Callie Dahl and senior Brittany Toor. MSU scored quickly to cut the lead to one, but sophomore Julia Gilbert notched her second goal of the season to bring the lead to two. Toor added to the Huskies lead with her second goal of the game on a shorthanded breakaway to bring the score to 4-1. MSU tallied a goal late, but SCSU’s Julie Friend was spectacular between the pipesstopping 39 Maverick shots to give SCSU the win.
Saturday’s rematch was all Huskies. Molli Mott, Jocelyn Zabrick, and Abby Ness scored for St. Cloud and Friend stopped 28 shots earning SCSU the weekend sweep. Toor and sophomore Sydney Burghardt both had three points on the weekend for SCSU.
The sweep is the first of 2011-12 for either the St. Cloud State Men or Women’s hockey teams. Also, the sweep is the first for the women since February 2010, and St. Cloud’s three game winning streak is its first of that length since November 2009. The Huskies are now 5-17-2 overall, and 4-14-0 in the WCHA. With the wins this weekend, the Huskies have passed MSU and are seventh in the league standings with 12 points.
The team is back in action on the road this week with a series with North Dakota from Ralph Englestad Arena. We’ll have updates from those games on our Twitter page. Follow @KVSCHockey
