Huskies Land on WCHA All-Star Team

The Saint Cloud State University Women's Hockey team is going to be well represeted when the Western Collegiate Hockey Association All-Star Team takes the ice at the end of the month. Four Huskies were named to the elite team along with head coach Jeff Giesen being named the head coach for the 2009 WCHA All-Star squad.

Other Huskies joining coach Giesen on the roster are senior forwards Holly Roberts and Caitlin Hogan, senior defender Danielle Hirsch and junior goalie Ashley Nixon.

The team will take on the 2009-2010 USA Women's National Team as they get prepared for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver next February. The Olympic team will kick start their national tour at the Xcel Energy Center on Friday, September 25th at 7:00 p.m. aganist the WCHA All-Star team.

The 2009-2010 SCSU Women's Hockey team will start of their season the next night aganist the same USA Olympic team at the National Hockey Center at 7:07 p.m.

Swimming and Diving Captains

The Saint Cloud State swimming and diving teams have selected their captains for the 2009-2010 season.
The women’s team will be captained by Alisha Blaydes, Katie Brueggeman, Megan Cotton, Cathy Haen and Kelly Vieau. The SCSU women finished eighth in the NCAA Championships last year.
Another group of five will be captaining the men’s squad for the 2009-2010 campaign. Joel Gregory, Brian Jacobs, Alex Milberger, Jim Schlup and Joe Spann have been chosen as captains. Last year the men finished 14th at the NCAA Championships. The 2009-2010 season starts October 16th at MSU-Moorhead.

Soccer Draws Even in Colorado

The St.Cloud State Soccer team drew out their road trip to the very end this weekend when they took Colorado State University-Pueblo to double overtime. The Huskies couldn't hammer out a win but the team did settle for a 1-1 tie, evening their season mark at 1-1-1.

St.Cloud was down a goal early but Chelsey Permenter netted the tieing goal in 1st with an assist from Gabrielle Najera. The score held up with the help from goalkeeper Elizabeth Kelly who had 10 saves on the day.

The Huskies are back in action on September 11th against Augustana in the NSIC Soccer Festival in Sioux Falls, South Dakota whille the team doesn't return to Husky Stadium until September 26th verus Southwest Minnesota State.

Volleyball Tourney Recap

   It was a tough weekend for the Saint Cloud State volleyball team as they hosted the Saint Cloud State tournament at Halenbeck Hall.

   The Huskies opened the tournament with a tough loss to the 5th ranked Nebraska-Kearney Lopers three sets to one. SCSU rebounded in the nightcap though as they scored a hard fought five set win, 3-2. 

    Day two of the tournament wasn’t so kind to the Huskies however as they lost to Wayne State and Upper Iowa. SCSU was led on the weekend by Kayla Tschida who had a team high 50 kills and 17 blocks. First year libero Sarah Madden also made an impact for the Huskies with 63 digs and seven serving aces in the tourney.
 

   Saint Cloud is now 2-6 overall and will travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin for the Wisconsin-Parkside Tournament September 11th-12th.

Huskies Drop Opener

The Saint Cloud State football team fell to Augustana Thursday night in their season opener, 38-16. It was a close game after the first but the Vikings erupted for 14 second quarter points while their defense stifled the Huskies, holding them to no points in the frame. Augustana quarterback Luke Butler put on a show in front of 4,671 fans at Husky Stadium, completing 12-of-19 passes for 209 yards and five touchdown strikes. Three of those touchdowns went to Sam Holsen; the other two went to Tyler Schulte.

The Huskies were led by Mitch Watkins through the air and a running back tandem on the ground. Watkins went 19-of-37 through the air for 165 yards and a touchdown. The senior signal caller also ran for a score on the night. Running backs Brandon Geiss and Jake Machacek ran for 62 and 63 yards, respectively.

SCSU has now lost four straight games to Augustana and two straight season openers. The Huskies will travel to Maine on September 3rd to take on the University of Maine in a non conference matchup. Kickoff for that game is at five o’clock.

Golf for Women's Hockey

The 2009 SCSU women’s hockey golf tournament is going on Saturday, August 29th at the Wapicada Golf Course in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. The event is sponsored by the women’s hockey program and the Center Ice Club for the purpose of raising money for the program. There will be a 2:00 pm shotgun start for the tournament which includes door prizes and a dinner afterwards.

The women’s hockey squad is less than a month away from the start of their season, as they open September 26th in an exhibition game against the United States Olympic Team.

Husky Football Kicks Off

The Saint Cloud State Football team kicks off the 2009 season on Thursday and will get a crack at redemption right from the start. The Huskies host Augustana, a team that may have knocked them out of the playoffs last season but this may not be the biggest story line for the night. The Huskies graduated 25 seniors last year and it has yet to be seen which players will step up to fill the holes. Although young, the team returns many of their skill position players and will look for their young recruits to grow up quickly in a competitive NSIC conference. KVSC will provide coverage starting with the pre-game show at 6:40 pm and the opening kickoff slated for 7:00.

Soccer Opens Season Sunday

The Saint Cloud State soccer team will open up their 2009 season on Sunday, August 30th at 1 p.m. at Husky Stadium. The game is a non conference matchup against Southwest Minnesota State.

The Huskies are led by second year head coach Becky Heiberger and are fresh off a season where they set a team record for wins. This year’s team has 14 upperclassmen and nine freshmen. Senior goaltender Elizabeth Kelly is one of a core group of returning players. Last season Kelly posted a strong 1.06 goals-against-average and had all eight wins.

SCSU was picked to finish sixth in the NSIC this season.

Softball Tryouts

The SCSU Husky softball team will be holding open field tryouts August 24th through the 27th from 2:00-4:30 pm. The tryouts will take place at the home of SCSU softball, Selke Field.

Anybody going out for the team will need to bring their own cleats, glove, bat, helmet and water bottle. The coaching staff is also asking that each person bring their class schedule and an NCAA Eligibility Center Pin Number to prove that they can play.

    The preseason rankings are in for NSIC volleyball and it’s no surprise that the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears are at the top. The defending national champions received 13 of 14 first place votes and 165 total points.
     St. Cloud State's volleyball squad is ranked 9th in the conference, receiving 65 total points. Coach Patricia Gerchy’s squad went 7-21 in the 2008 campaign, including a 5-15 conference record. The Huskies will open their 2009 season August 28th and 29th in Marquette, Michigan for the Northern Michigan Tournament.

SCSU Soccer Ranked 6th in Conference

The preseason rankings are in… and the St. Cloud State soccer team is ranked sixth in the 14 team NSIC conference. For the second consecutive season, Minnesota State University, Mankato was picked by the league’s coaches to win the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Rounding out the top five is Winona State, Augustana, Minnesota Duluth and University of Mary.


The Huskies charted an 8-8-2 overall record last year, placing seventh in the NSIC under the leadership of first-year coach Elizabeth Kelly. SCSU is expected to be led by senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Kelly, junior midfield Gabby Najera, junior defender Jessica Pafko, junior forward Lindsey Sather and sophomore forward Alexandra Pafko.

SCSU Lands Another UNI Transfer

Head Coach Pat Dolan made good on his predicition this past week: signing another player from the University of Iowa. The SCSU baseball program announced the signing of Ryan Schwenke, a former UNI player and the second pickup from the dismantled program that was cut last year. Coach Dolan noted a few weeks ago that the team was still actively recruiting from the school and was hopeful they would sign at least one more.

Schwenke, along with Gabe Schultz who was signed a few weeks ago, will join the Husky Baseball team in the fall and both are expected to make contributions. Ryan Schwenke first played at Iowa Central Community College, where he was All-Region first team in 2007 and All-Region second team in 2008 as a reliever.
 

 

Former Husky Lands First Place

Former St.Cloud State standout golfer Brett Swedberg took first place this week at the Minnesota State Open Championship. Swedberg, who played for the Huskies from 2003-2005, shot a 67 during the final round of play at the Hastings Country Club and was 3-under par for the entire three day tournament.

According to the Minnesota Golf Assoication, Swedberg will continue to play in tournaments throughout the Midwest during the summer and will think about playing in the qualifying rounds for the PGA Tour.

Softball Camp Offered

The Saint Cloud State University softball team is offering youth in the area a chance to improve their softball skills this fall. The Husky softball team is hosting the 2009 Fall Developmental Clinics, for youth softball players ages 10-18 at Selke Field in St.Cloud during September and October.   

SCSU head softball coach Paula U'Ren and her staff will offer youth fastpitch softball players the opportunity to improve their hitting, pitching and fundamentals during night clinics. Rudd Named Head Coach for US team

Rudd Named Head Coach for US team

Saint Cloud State University men's hockey assistant coach Eric Rudd has been named  head coach for the U.S. Boys Select Under-18 Team. The team will compete at the 2009 Iva Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Piestany, Slovakia on August 11th through the 15th. The U.S. roster will compete against teams from Canada, Russia, Finland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

This is the second year in a row that Rudd has coached a U.S. select team. Last year Rudd coached the 2008 U.S. Boys Select Under-17 Team.

Next fall, Rudd will begin his fifth season as an assistant coach at St.Cloud with the first game of the season set for October 9th, at Miami University (Ohio).
