The KVSC Sports Department is proud to present the 2012 Fall Sports Schedule. Listeners can tune in for coverage of St. Cloud State football, soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball as well as men’s and women’s hockey. Through December the Sports Department will be covering 28 events both on air and on the Sports Stream. The first event is Husky football, Thursday August 30 live on 88.1 FM.

The St. Cloud State volleyball season is officially underway. The team reported for the first practice of the season on Monday. Head coach Michelle Blaeser will be returning for her third season, she will be joined by nine returning players. Last year's injury plagued squad posted a 6-22 overall record. The outlook for this season includes better health across the court. The 2012 season will kick off Aug. 31 at the Upper Iowa Tournament against the South Dakota School of Mines. The first home match will be Sept. 14 against MSU Moorhead. Stay tuned to KVSC Sports for the latest in all Husky Athletics.

SCSU has announced the hiring of Garrett Raboin as an assistant men’s hockey coach effective immediately.
Raboin was a standout on the Huskies blueline from 2006 to 2010. He most recently played professional hockey in Europe from 2010 to 2012. In the 2010-2011 season and the beginning of the 2011-2012 season Raboin played in Finland for Turku. He completed the 2011-2012 season in Norway with the Lorenskag club.
SCSU head coach Bob Motzko said that Raboin is a natural fit for this position and the team. Motzko also said that as a player, Raboin was one of the all-time great team leaders in the program’s history and he has all the makings of an outstanding coach.
Raboin says he had a great four years at SCSU as a player and as an alumnus to return here as a coach is a dream come true. The Huskies will kick off the 2012-2013 season on October 12th and 13th on the road at the University of New Hampshire.
SCSU will open its home season on October 19th and 20th.

The 2012 SCSU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have earned College Swimming Coaches Association of American Scholar All America Team Honors.
The Husky men’s team ranked fourth in the country in the NCAA Division 2 swimming and diving with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.27. The Husky women’s team ranked eighth in the country with a team grade point average of 3.43. The Team Scholar All American award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams, who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
The award is presented to teams achieving this standard in the fall semester and the semester of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Husky women’s hockey senior forward Brittany Toor has been named as a recipient of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Post-Graduate Scholarship for 2012-13.
The WCHA scholarships are grants of ten thousand dollars each that are given to graduating WCHA student-athletes for excellence on the ice and in the classroom. Toor and Montana Vichorek of Bemidji State University are the co-recipients this year receiving five thousand dollars each.
Toor was a leading scorer for the Huskies and also a leader off the ice where she graduates with a 3.91 GPA and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She is the 8th best all-time scorer in SCSU women’s hockey history. She earned the WCHA Scholar-Athlete award three times and was named to the All-WCHA academic team three times. She was also on the Dean’s list all four years at SCSU.

SCSU junior goaltender Mike Lee has been named to the 2011-2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men’s At-Large Team as a third team selection. This marks the fifth SCSU athlete in 2011-2012 season to gain Capital One Academic All-America status.
Lee led the WCHA this winter with a .930 save rate in overall games played in the 2011-2012 season. He charted a 8-6-2 record for the Huskies as a junior, which included a 2.24 goals against average rate. He also had one shutout this season for the Huskies.
The 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Men’s At-Large Teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

The St. Cloud Rox had a stellar performance from starting pitcher Paul Schaak leading to a victory on Sunday night at Joe Faber Field. The Rox defeated the Mankato MoonDogs 6-1 to break the MoonDog’s season opening four game winning streak.
Schaak lasted seven innings to earn the victory for the Rox. He gave up only three hits, struck out one and walked none. His defense played well behind him as well, committing only a single error after a rough start to the season with the mitts.
The Rox hit the road for games Monday and Tuesday against the Waterloo Bucks before coming back home on Wednesday for a matchup with Alexandria.

SCSU junior outfielder Phil Imholte has been named to the 2012 Daktronics Baseball All-America Team as a third team selection. He is joined by teammate senior pitcher Logan Birr who was named as an Honorable Mention choice.
This is the third consecutive season that an SCSU baseball player has earned Division II All-America Status. Birr has previously earned the notice in 2009.
The Daktronics Division II All-America Baseball team is selected by the college sports information directors each season, with players being nominated by their school’s sports information official.

The St. Cloud Rox will kick off their inaugural Northwoods League season Saturday, June 2 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud. Joining the Rox on opening day will be former MLB Cy Young award winner Bret Saberhagen. Saberhagen will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on opening day as the Rox take on defending North Division champion Mankato MoonDogs.
Saberhagen played 16 seasons in the MLB, where he played with the Kansas City Royals, the New York Mets, the Colorado Rockies, and the Boston Red Sox. While playing for Kansas City in 1985, Saberhagen won a Cy Young award with a 20-6 record and a 2.87 ERA. In 1989, he won his second Cy Young with the Royals, earning a 23-6 record and a 2.16 ERA.
The opening game on June 2nd will start at 7:05 p.m. and will also feature fireworks immediately after the game. Tickets for the Rox’s inaugural season are still available, and you can purchase online at St. Cloud Rox.com or by calling 320-240-9798.

St. Cloud State University Huskies were defeated in a classic back-and-forth ball game this Sunday in the NCAA Central Region Championship at Franklin Rodgers Park in Mankato. The championship came down to a play at the plate, with the Huskies losing to the Minnesota State University Mankato Mavericks 5-4 in the ninth inning.
Maverick Mike Eckhart drove the ball to center field in the ninth inning to score Matt Kuchenbecker. He beat out a throw to the plate from Brian Hansen to score the winning run and end the Huskies’ season. Bryce Bellin got the win for the Mavericks after giving up one a hit in three scoreless innings. Junior Chris Kubitz took the loss after not allowing any hits in three and one-third innings, but giving up one run to the Mavericks who scored three of their five runs without a hit in the game.
SCSU baseball ends the season with an overall record of 48-14.

The SCSU softball team made the grade this semester as their team grade point average was 3.01. Out of the 24 athletes seven finished the semester with a GPA of 3.5 or above and seven others recorded GPA’s of 3.0 or better for the semester.
Head Coach Paula U’Ren said that these athletes go from the classroom to practice to studying and take great pride in having outstanding grades and make it a team effort.
The Husky softball program boasts a 100 percent graduation rate over the past 15 year and at the same time has maintained a 3.0 team GPA.

SCSU junior goaltender Mike Lee was recently named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 7 NCAA Division I Men’s At-Large Team. The award, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Lee led the WCHA this winter with a .930 save rate in overall games played in 2011-12. He also had one shutout this season for the Huskies. Lee signed a professional contract with the Phoenix Coyotes organization at the end of the 2011-12 season.
Lee ended his SCSU career with a 32-29-9 records 2.62 GAA, four shutouts and a .917 save rate. He ranks third in the team records with 2,109 career saves.

KVSC is the only place to hear the #8-ranked Huskies baseball squad attempt to defend their NSIC crown. Dave Overlund will call the action live from Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato with Jake Thomfohrda in studio beginning Wednesday at Noon vs Augustana.
If the Huskies win their first game they will play again Thursday night at 7 pm. If SCSU drops game one they would play Thursday at noon.
SCSU is on a team record 17-game winning streak and is looking to close out some unfinished business from 2011.

MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS: Kyle Neumann won the 1500 meter run, Derek Barett won the 110 meter hurdles, Lucas Windholz won the 800 meter run, Jeremy Davis took the 400 meter hurdles, Tendeh Brownell won the 200 meter dash, Gemechu Bekelcho won the 5000 meter run, and the team took home the 4x400 meter relay.
The women's track and field team finished in fourth place with 90 points. Winona State won the event with just over 268 points.
