The St. Cloud State University Wrestling team found success at the NWCA Division II National Duals in Springfield, Ill. The team captured the championship for the second consecutive year. The Huskies faced UNC-Pembroke to open competition then took on Upper Iowa on Saturday before advancing to the semifinal round Sunday morning. In the semifinals SCSU faced UW-Parkside and won by a score of 27-9 to advance to the championship. In the championship dual the Huskies took on Notre Dame (Ohio) and were victorious 17-15. Senior, Jacob Kahnke’s victory in the 285-pound division gave the team three points earning the victory and championship.
Andy Pekorny is the NSIC Wrestler of the week for his 2-0 performance at the tournament. He defeated two-time defending NCAA champion and number one ranked Trevor Franklin of No. 5 Upper Iowa. Pokorny also defeated Marty Carlson of Notre Dame College of Ohio by a score of 14-3 in the championship dual. He is 11-1 on the season at 133-pounds for the Huskies.
The wins extend the winning streak to 37 consecutive duals dating back to the 2010-2011 season. Next up for the Huskies is NSIC action against Minnesota State, Moorhead in Halenbeck Hall on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The SCSU basketball teams were on the road for a pair of games over the weekend at Southwest MN State University and the University of Sioux Falls.
The women’s basketball team was 1-1 on the weekend taking down SMSU on Friday 77-70. The game with the Mustangs was a tight battle to the end. With 2:43 left in the second half the game was tied. The Huskies trailed by as many as ten points in the contest. Jessica Benson led the Huskies with a career-high 32 point performance in the win. Sam Price and Lexy Petermann also scored in the double digits for SCSU. Saturday afternoon the Huskies fell in a close contest with the University of Sioux Falls 56-57. Benson and Price led the Huskies scoring double-digit points. SCSU is now 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the NSIC.
The men’s team was 2-0 over the weekend in the pair of NSIC contests. On Friday the team took down the Mustangs of SMSU in a come from behind fashion. The Huskies won the close matchup 71-69. Theo Rothstein gave the Huskies their first lead of the game late in the second half. He led the team with 12 points in the second half for a game total of 14. Shaun Jensen added the final seven points to catapult the Huskies to victory in the final minutes. He finished the game with 12 points, James Fort and Damarius Cruz also finished with double-digit totals on Friday. Saturday Cruz scored a career high 25 points in the 83-73 win over the University of Sioux Falls. Jensen, Rothstein and Connor Niehaus also tallied double digit totals in the victory. The men’s team is now 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the NSIC.
The teams have a quick turnaround facing UMD in Duluth on Tuesday evening.

The Husky wrestling squad will participate in the NWCA Division II National Duals this weekend in Springfield, Ill. SCSU will start action on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. against UNC-Pembroke. The Huskies are the number 4 seed in the tournament. Action from the two-day tournament can be heard on the KVSC Sports Stream.
St. Cloud State is the defending NWCA Division II Champions and will carry their 33 game dual winning streak into the tournament. This week redshirt freshman Clint Poster is the NSIC Wrestler of the week for his performance at the Grand Canyon Duals last weekend. Poster is 17-1 this season in the 157 weight class for SCSU.

Friday night the Huskies were able to light the lamp first when senior Ben Hanowski found the net halfway through the first period, assists on the play went to Drew LeBlanc and Jonny Brodzinski. The second period was not friendly as the Wildcats scored two goals before SCSU’s Cory Thorson found the back of the net off the stick of Nick Oliver. It was all tied up for a few minutes before the Huskies allowed a power play goal for NMU to take a 3-2 lead. It was the first power play goal the team allowed since Nov. 30 and was the eventual game winning goal. The Wildcats scored three unanswered goals in the third period to seal the deal on Friday night by a final score of 6-2. It was SCSU freshman goalie Rasmus Reijola's first career start.
The teams met again on Saturday night for game two of the series. It was a tight battle between the dogs and the cats until midway through the second period when Brodzinski found the back of the net giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Nick Jensen and LeBlanc each had an assist on the play. It was the only time SCSU was able to score all game despite having 38 shots in the contest. The Huskies held the Wildcats to 21 shots but two of them were able to find the back of the net. The first NMU goal was scored as the buzzer rang to end the second period. The Wildcats sealed the deal halfway through the third period to earn the 2-1 victory and a road sweep. Sophomore goaltender Ryan Faragher ended the night with 19 saves. This series marked the second time the Huskies have been swept this season. The opening weekend of the season when the Huskies traveled to University of New Hampshire was the first. It was the first time SCSU has been swept at home since the 2010-2011 season when Colorado College took down SCSU 3-0 on Dec. 10 and 5-2 on December 11.
This upcoming weekend the Huskies have a bye before returning to WCHA play next weekend at home against Denver to wrap up the ten game home stand. Over the weekend the Huskies fell from the top position in the WCHA when Nebraska-Omaha swept Colorado College. The Huskies now sit in second place with 18 points and a 9-5-0 conference record. Overall on the season the huskies are 12-10-0.
Other notes from the weekend:
- Ben Hanowski notched one point in the two games giving him 97 on his career. That’s just three shy of the 100-point club.
- Drew LeBlanc was able to get on the scoring sheet both nights with an assist in each game. He continues to lead the nation in assist with 24 on the season. The next closest man on the charts is UNO’s Ryan Walters who has 20. LeBlanc currently owns an 11 game point streak. He is ranked 11th in the record book for SCSU points notching with 127 career points thus far.
- Jonny Brodzinski now has a seven game point streak after notching an assist and a goal over the weekend. The freshman is one of SCSU’s top scorers with nine goals and six assists on the season.
- Freshmen Kalle Kossila was held off the scoring sheet this weekend. It’s the first weekend time since Nov. 9-10 that he did not score a goal or notch an assist.
- The Huskies were unsuccessful on the eight power play opportunities over the weekend.

The wrestling squad participated in the Grand Canyon Duals in Phoenix, AZ on Saturday. The event features some of the best wrestling teams in the nation. The Huskies participated in four duals throughout the day and went a perfect 4-0. SCSU took down Western State 38-3 to start off the day then Colorado Mesa 32-3, California Baptists 33-9 before ending the day with a victory over Colorado School of Mines 39-6. It’s the third season SCSU has participated in the Grand Canyon Duals and the third consecutive season without a loss. The team now holds a 7-0 dual record this season and extended their record winning streak to 33 duals.
Up next for the team is the National Duals in Springfield, Illinois Jan 12-13. John Peterson will be traveling with the team and coving the event live on the KVSC Sports Stream. The SCSU women’s hockey team played their first game in a month hosting WCHA opponent Bemidji State University over the weekend. The Huskies earned a split on the weekend winning on Friday before falling to the Beavers on Saturday.
Friday’s game was exciting for various reasons, especially once the Huskies got rolling. The Huskies downed the beavers 4-2. It took until the second half of the second period to get the scoring in the game started. Michelle Burke notched her first goal of the season to put the Huskies up 1-0. Skye Kelly and Sydney Burghardt got the assist on the play to round out the points for the first two periods. The third period was action packed. BSU scored two goals in the first five minutes to take the lead. SCSU retaliated by scoring three more times to get the win. Hanna Brodt scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game up before Molli Mott scored on the power play for the game winner. Julia Gilbert scored an empty net goal to complete the win for the Huskies on Friday afternoon. Freshmen Julie Friend ended the game with 29 saves and the first win of the new year.
Saturday afternoon featured less goals but equal action as the Huskies fell 2-0. The Beavers scored the games only two goals in the second period. The Huskies worked to take back the lead in the third but were unsuccessful hitting the post twice in the final three minutes. Freshmen Katie Fitzgerald charted 29 saves for the Huskies in the 2-0 loss. The Huskies had 21 shots on goal.
The team will hit the road this weekend for a pair of WCHA games with Minnesota Duluth on Saturday and Sunday.

The husky wrestling squad will open the 2013 portion of their season in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday. The team will participate in the Grand Canyon Duals that features the nation’s best division two programs, this is the third straight season the Huskies have participated in this event. All the action gets started on Saturday morning at 9:45 a.m. Our own John Peterson will be traveling with the team to provide exclusive coverage of this prestigious event. The ladies hockey team will be in action at home this weekend after a month long hiatus. The team will take on WCHA opponent Bemidji State. The Beavers currently sit in last place in the conference with seven points. The Huskies rank just one place above the Beavers with nine points in seventh place. SCSU owns a 3-11-0 conference record and a 7-12-1 record overall. BSU enters the series 2-11-1 in the WCHA and 3-13-2 overall.

The SCSU men's hockey team was able to edge the Engineers on Friday night at the National Hockey and Events Center by a final score of 2-1 earning them a series split. The non-conference opponent, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was in town for a Thursday/Friday series.
On Thursday night the Huskies were able to strike first in the opening period but couldn't hang on to the lead in the second period as RPI scored three unanswered goals. The Huskies made things interesting in the third period thanks to a goal by Cory Thorson to tie things up. The Engineers fought back and scored the game winning goal with less than five minutes to play in the game. Kalle Kossila and Jonny Brodzinski rounded out the goal scoring for the Huskies in the 4-3 loss. It was freshmen Joey Benik's first career game after recovering from a broken leg that happened during the first practice of the season. Benik notched an assist on the Thorson goal to earn his first collegiate point.
Game two of the series took place on Friday night and was a close fought battle as St. Cloud State prevailed 2-1. The Huskies got help from the upperclassmen who notched both goals in the second period. Ben Hanowski scored the Huskies first goal with help from Drew LeBlanc and Nic Dowd. With just seconds remaining the second period Drew LeBlanc put the game winning goal in the back of the net off the sticks of Jonny Brodzinski and Kalle Kossila.
Hanowski now has 96 career points just four shy of the century club. Drew LeBlanc became a member of the 100 point club earlier this season, currently leading the team in points on the season and leading all of Division One hockey with 22 assists so far this season. On his career he has 125 points putting him eleventh in all time points leaders for SCSU.
This week the team moved up one place in the USCHO polls now holding down spot 15. On Friday and Saturday the team will host Northern Michigan University at the NHEC. On Friday night the action begins at 7:15 with the pregame show on the KVSC airwaves. The puck will drop at 7:37. On Saturday night the puck will drop at 7:07 with a 6:45 pregame show. The SCSU men's hockey team will continue their home stand with a pair non-conference contests with RPI this week. The Huskies are currently ranked No. 16 in the USCHO poll. The Engineers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute are unranked and hold a 4-6-4 overall record, they are 1-5-2 in league (ECAC) play. SCSU holds the top place in the WCHA with 18 points and a conference record of 9-5-0 and 11-7-0 overall.

The KVSC Sports Department is proud to present the 2013 sports broadcasting schedule. Currently featuring thirty four events spanning from men’s hockey to wrestling and baseball. The SCSU men’s hockey team found success at home over the weekend. The team swept WCHA opponent Colorado College at the NHEC. The Huskies started the weekend with a 5-3 victory on Friday night before completing the sweep with a 3-1 victory on Saturday.
The freshmen continued to shine scoring six of the eight goals on the weekend. Freshman Kalle Kossila scored in both games, he leads all WCHA rookies in scoring this season with ten goals. The WCHA honored the SCSU freshmen again this week naming Johnny Brodzinski the Rookie of the Week for his two goals and assist over the week. Senior, Drew LeBlanc continued his point streak, notching at least one point in each of the last seven games. Ben Hanowski notched a goal and an assist over the weekend to put his career point total at 95.
With the wins the Huskies improve to 11-7-0 overall and 9-5-0 in the WCHA. The Huskies are in first place in the WCHA standings heading into the holiday break and are ranked 16 in the USCHO poll. The team will have this weekend off before hosting RPI on Dec. 27 and 28 to round out 2012. For the latest in SCSU Hockey news follow us on Twitter.

The SCSU women’s basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Friday in a conference contest with Northern State University. The Huskies fell 51-62, Jessica Benson finished with 13 points in the game. Saturday the Huskies rebounded and took down MSU Moorhead 79-56. It was an offensive domination as Jessica Benson, Morgan Lof, Sam Price and Lexy Petermann all finished with double digit point totals. Benson led the way with 17 points. SCSU is now 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the NSIC. The team will be off until January 4-5 when they host the University of Mary and Minot State.
The men’s basketball team had their undefeated season crushed over the weekend. The team was victorious over Northern State on Friday night 73-54. Kevin Levandoski scored a career high 19 points in the win. Saturday the team worked their way back from a 19 point deficit at the half but fell to MSU Moorhead 78-74. Shaun Jensen tallied a career high 30 points during in the game. The team is now 7-1 overall and 4-1 in NSIC play.

Freshmen Husky hockey player, David Morley is the WCHA Co-Rookie of the week after his performance last weekend when the team split with UNO. Morley scored a hat trick in Friday’s 6-5 loss. The team bounded back Saturday night with a 2-1 win at the NHEC. The #17 ranked Huskies are home again this weekend to take on Colorado College. Tune in on KVSC for both games of the series. The SCSU wrestling team is finding success early in the season. Senior Shamus O'Grady is the NSIC Wrestling player of the week for his performance at the Husky Open over the weekend. O'Grady was named recipient of the John Oxton Award (MVP) as well as the Jack Gause Award (most pins in the least amount of time) and was the champion of his weight division. Clint Poster also was the champion of his division. The team is ranked second in Division Two wrestling.
The SCSU wrestling team will host their first dual of the season tonight (Dec. 11) in Halenbeck Hall at 7 p.m. The team will also be in action tomorrow night at St. John's University. The NSIC season will start on Saturday with a home dual with Minot State. All three of these duals can be heard on the KVSC Sports Stream with John Peterson.
