The SCSU women’s hockey team returns to action this weekend when the Wisconsin Badgers come to town. The KVSC Sports Department will provide coverage of both games in the WCHA series. Listen to Friday’s game on the KVSC Sports Stream. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. The pregame show will start at 6:45 p.m. Saturday’s contest can be heard on 88.1 FM or online with a 2:45 p.m. pregame show and a 3:07 p.m. puck drop.

St. Cloud State football co-offensive coordinator Ian Shoemaker has accepted a new position with Central Washington University. Shoemaker will serve as the head coach of the Central Washington University Wildcats football team. He served as the co-offensive coordinator for six seasons with St. Cloud State.
The Huskies just completed their most successful season in history finishing with a 12-2 overall record. Huskies averaged 39.3 points a game and 456.6 yards per game of total offense this season. A nationwide search will begin immediately to fill Shoemaker’s vacant position.

Despite the snow covered baseball diamonds, the SCSU baseball team is in preparation for the 2014 season. St. Cloud State is in pursuit of another NSIC Championship.
The team has just held their annual ugly holiday sweater competition and will stay busy over the holiday break hosting the annual Starz of Tomorrow baseball camp. Assistant Sports Director, Declan Goff, chatted with the head coach of the SCSU baseball team, Pat Dolan, this week. Senior Jack Moro from the St. Cloud State football team has been named a finalist for the Cliff Harris award. The Cliff Harris Award is presented to the top defensive player in the country representing Division two, three and NAIA college and universities. The winner of the award is chosen by head coaches and a selection committee of college and pro football greats, with the winner being announced on December 24th.
Moro was also named in All –American this season, for the 2nd consecutive year.

The St. Cloud State University men’s hockey team saw their seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end Friday night as they hosted #10 Union College.
The Dutchmen defeated the Huskies 4-1 in the first game of the series for the Huskies second loss of the season. Union lead 2-0 thanks to a pair of power play goals after one period of play and never looked back. SCSU's Joey Benik cut the lead in half to make it a 2-1 game about 10 minutes into the second period on a power play goal. That stood to be SCSU's lone tally in the game, the Dutchmen added another pair of goals in the third period to make the final a score of 4-1. Both teams had 35 shots in the contest.
SCSU rebounded Saturday night featuring two goals in the third to come from behind and tie the game. Joey Holka netted the first goal of the game in the opening frame to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. However, it would be Union that dominated play in the second period, outshooting SCSU 13-7 and netting three goals. After two periods of play Union lead SCSU 3-1. The Huskies rallied in the third, Joey Benik scored on the power play just after the start of the period and then with 20 seconds remaining Jonny Brodzinski netted a power play goal to make it a 3-3 game. The contest went through overtime without another score. Union got the go-ahead goal in the shootout but, the game will go into the record books as a tie. Of note, T.J. Belisle played his first career game Saturday night. The Huskies remain undefeated on Saturday nights this season.
The Huskies head into the holiday break with a 11-2-3 overall record and 6-1-1 in conference play. St. Cloud State sits in the top spot in the NCHC as well with a two point lead over Nebraska-Omaha. SCSU will host the US National Development team on Saturday, January 4 at 7:07 p.m. Listen to the action on 88.1 FM.

The Huskies women’s hockey team continued their home stand this weekend when the University of Minnesota Duluth came to town. The Bulldogs got off to an early lead in both games of the series. Friday’s game featured two UMD goals in the first period and that would be enough to win as the Huskies fell 2-1. Saturday proved to be a much tougher test. The game was tied until just 13 seconds remained in the game, when the Bulldogs scored to make it 2-1 and complete the sweep.
The Huskies are 3-14-3 overall heading into the holiday break and sit with a 2-10-2 conference record. The team returns to play hosting the University of Wisconsin January 3-4 at the Brooks Center.

SCSU’s basketball teams each won a pair of conference games in front of the home crowd this weekend. The men’s team hosted Minot State Friday, taking the win 97-73 then capped off the weekend Saturday against the University of Mary by a score of 80-55.
The women’s basketball team also had success at home taking on the Minot and Mary. SCSU won on Friday 92-85 before defeating U-Mary Saturday 100-80. In Saturday’s game Senior guard, Sam Price exceeded 1,000 career points. She finished the game with a career-best 28 points, five other Huskies also scored in double-digits during the game.
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have an 8-1 overall record and are 4-1 in the NSIC North.

On Saturday morning the SCSU Wrestling team hosted the 2013 Holiday Inn Husky Open. The event features the regions top wrestling programs. The Huskies earned two weight bracket titles. One win was at 133 pounds by Zach Stweart and the other came from co-champions at 149 pounds with Josh Howk and Matt Leibforth.
The team will enjoy a couple week break before competing in the Mid Atlantic Duals in Ashland, Ohio on January 5.

The St. Cloud State men’s hockey team remains undefeated on the road this season after a weekend sweep in Duluth. The Huskies played the Bulldogs for the first time in NCHC play.
Friday night the Huskies narrowly escaped with the 4-2 victory forced to battle back the first two periods. Nic Dowd notched the Huskies first goal of the game on the power play in the first period to make it 1-1. The Bulldogs got a power play goal of their own by Justin Crandall in the second to regain the lead. It was short lived however, as Kalle Kossila scored another Husky power play goal to tie things up again. Jonny Brodzinski struck just under four minutes into the third period to give the Huskies their first lead of the game. His goal proved to be the game winning goal as UMD was held off the scoreboard. Brodzinski added an empty-net goal with less than a minutes left for good measure. SCSU fought with the Bulldogs coming out on top 4-2.
Saturday’s game belonged to SCSU from the start as they scored early and often skating to a 5-1 victory. Jimmy Murray got things going for the Huskies with his first goal of the season half-way through the opening frame. SCSU kept the throttle down as Brooks Bertsch and David Morley added goals in the second period to extend the Huskies lead. Charlie Sampair scored for UMD to cut the lead to 3-1 before the buzzer sounded to end the second period. SCSU came out flying in the third as Cory Thorson netting a goal just 33 seconds into the period, extending SCSU's lead to 4-1. The final goal of the game came off Husky freshman Ryan Papa's stick to seal the deal and make the final score 5-1. The Huskies were outshot 27-20 in the contest. David Morley had a goal and two assists for three points in the game.
SCSU's defense gave up just three goals over the weekend. Senior, co-captain Kevin Gravel and goaltender Ryan Faragher both played a large part in that feat. Both have been named NCHC players of the week. Gravel is the NCHC Defenseman of the Week after blocking a pair of shots and notching three assists. He had a +5 rating on the weekend, it's the second time this season Gravel has earned the Defenseman of the Week award. The first coming after the opening weekend of play (Oct 7-13). Goaltender Ryan Faragher has also been honored this week as the Goaltender of the Week, like Gravel it's the second time this season. The first time Faragher had the honor was the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 3. Faragher posted 55 saves on the weekend, averaging 1.5 goals-against with a .948 save percentage. He played all 120 minutes in net for the Huskies during the series.
The Huskies earned six NCHC points and move to 6-1-1 in conference play and 11-1-2 overall. SCSU sits alone in the top spot of the conference. The Huskies have been ranked #1 in the USCHO poll this week, they also sit on top of the RPI rankings. Up next, SCSU hosts #10 Union (7-1-0 in ECAC play; 10-3-2 overall).

St. Cloud State freshman wrestler Tanner Johnshoy is the NSIC Wrestler of the week. He was 4-0 last week for the Huskies wrestling in the 125 pound class. He opened the week with a win that helped lead the Huskies to victory over the Johnnies for the teams record-breaking 48th consecutive dual match victory.
The Huskies take their winning streak on the road Thursday night with a dual in Moorhead against Concordia College. Listen to the action on the KVSC Sports Stream.

The historic St. Cloud State football season has come to a close. The Huskies were defeated by the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State 59-21 on Saturday afternoon in NCAA Division II quarterfinal play. The Bearcats will advance to the NCAA semifinals. The Huskies trailed at halftime 28-0. Dan Brown caught a pass from Phil Klaphake on the first play of the second half for the Huskies first points of the game. Michael Walker added a touchdown for SCSU in the third quarter and Klaphake ran for one late in the fourth. Northwest Missouri State got the ball early and often amassing 541 total yards of offense in the game.
The #12 ranked Huskies season ends with a 12-2 record.

The SCSU wrestling team now owns the NCAA Division two record for the most consecutive dual match victories with 48 straight wins. The record was broken Thursday night when the Huskies hosted Saint John’s. SCSU's streak started on February 4, 2011. The Huskies defeated the Johnnies 38-0 on December 5 in Halenbeck Hall.
On Saturday the Huskies took part in the Dragon open in Moorhead, MN capturing five first place finishes, team scores were not kept.

SCSU’s women’s hockey team hosted Minnesota State in conference action over the weekend. The Huskies won Friday’s game in sweeping fashion by a score of 6-2. It was the Huskies first home victory of the season. Molli Mott scored a pair of goals in the contest, one on the power play. SCSU outshot Minnesota State 45-27.
Saturday afternoon was a tough battle for the Huskies as they fell 3-1 to the Mavericks despite outshooting them 38-33. Audrey Hanmer had the Huskies lone goal on the power play. Hanmer notched two assists in Friday's game for a weekend total of three points.
St. Cloud State continues their home stand this weekend when Minnesota Duluth comes to town. Listen to the action on 88.1 FM Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon on the KVSC Sports Stream. Both games begin at 3:07 p.m.

SCSU will square off with Northwest Missouri State University this Saturday in the quarterfinal of the NCAA playoffs. This is just the second time SCSU has reached the quarterfinal of the NCAA playoffs. Northwest Missouri is ranked second in the nation and were a perfect 11-0 on the season, and defeated the UMD-Bulldogs last weekend. Both Henderson State and Minnesota-State Mankato were also undefeated, before being defeated by the Huskies.
The Huskies will be without seniors Renard Robinson and Marvin Matthews, as both have been suspended for one game after being arrested in downtown St. Cloud, Saturday evening. SCSU are already without seniors Jack Moro and Eli Shoemaker.
Quaterback, Phillip Klaphake and defensive back, Jack Moro have been named to the Daktronics Super Region 3 Team. Moro is a first team pick for the second straight year. He broke the school record for interceptions (21) this season and led the NSIC with seven interceptions. Klaphake has been named to the second team. He's broken records this season for the most passing yards in a single game (512), tied the single game record for passing touchdowns (five, done twice this season), set the single season passing yards record (3,379), he has the most passing yards in school history (11,092) and the total offense (13,577 yards). Klaphake is a four-time All-NSIC member. He is also a Harlon Hill candidate.
