The Huskies men's basketball team opened the season with three victories at Halenbeck Hall. They beat the University of Northwestern 64-51, toppled rival St. John’s University 80-74, and demolished Mayville State University 88-56.
The Huskies then traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin to take on the University of Wisconsin Parkside. The Huskies held a 12-point lead with just over 7 minutes to go in regulation, but undefeated UW-Parkside came storming back to cut the lead to just 4 with 45 seconds left in the game. In the last 45 seconds the Huskies would attempt 10 free throws making only 3. The only player to cash in on these attempts was sophomore guard Jordan Poydras who went 3 of 6 from the line. With 7 seconds left UW-Parkside had managed to trim the Husky lead to 3 as Connor Niehaus potentially saved the day as he stole the ball from Andy Mazurczak just before time ran out, handing UW-Parkside its first loss of the season. SCSU shot an abysmal 53.6% from the line in the game and statistically were led in scoring by Jordan Poydras. He ended the game with 32 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. Damarius Cruz added 16 points and 6 rebounds to help the Huskies edge UW-Parkside 87-84.
After this thrilling victory the Huskies returned home to host the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs and, to put it simply, this game was won in the first half. At the break SCSU held a commanding 41-22 lead. Key Huskies’ were James Fort and Damarius Cruz who poured in a combined 19 points in the period. Fort ended the game with 20 points and Cruz had 13 to go along with his 4 rebounds and 2 assists. This 86-65 victory at home would extend the Husky overall winning streak to five, which was broken, the very next game with a road loss to the BSU Beavers 70-65. But the real kicker was what happened nearly a month later when SCSU faced UMD again. The Huskies fell behind by 15 early in the second half but by the end of the game were on the verge of stealing a win on the road. With 13 seconds remaining in regulation the Huskies trailed by 5. Jordan Poydras came in off the bench and scored a layup along with 2 free throws to narrow the gap to one as time expired. The final score was 78-79 in favor of UMD. Poydras finished with 21 points leading the team. Matt Craggs and Kevin Levondoski helped out with 15 and 14 points respectively.
Following the heartbreaker the Huskies hit the road to take on the 12-2 (now 16-3) Mankato State Mavericks. Powered by the 77% shooting performance in the second half the Mavericks dropped the Huskies 97-77 giving the Huskies a 4-3 (now 8-4) record in conference play. Between then and now the Huskies have defeated Concordia 70-66, Southwest Minnesota State University 91-83, the University of Sioux Falls 85-73, Minot State University 88-85, and lost to the University of Mary 88-83 after beating them in their first meeting 80-55 at Halenbeck Hall.
Coming up the Huskies will host Northern State University on the 24th. This will kick off a four game home-stand which is good news for the Huskies as they are currently 8-0 at home (4-4 on the road).
The SCSU Women’s basketball program opened up the season with 2 road exhibition games both of which they lost. However, when the season officially got underway they got on a nice roll. They opened the season at home against Valley City State University and won in dominating fashion 91-65. They continued their momentum against Grand View University in Iowa winning 85-67. Then they returned home to defeat the University of Wisconsin-Stout 83-59, Dakota State University 88-63, and the University of Minnesota Duluth 81-73 before falling on the road to Bemidji State University 82-99.
Despite this loss the Huskies managed to advance to 8-1 after beating the University of Minnesota Crookston 85-70, Minot State University 92-85, and the University of Mary 100-80 (highest scoring output of season).
This is when the season took a left turn. After earning an 8-1 record the Huskies dropped 5 of their next 7 games making them 6-6 in the NSIC, and 10-6 overall coming into this weekend. Leading the team so far this season (almost across the board) has been senior forward Jessica Benson. Benson who is currently leading the team in points, rebounds, steals, blocks, and minutes this season will no doubt be a key to getting the Huskies back on track at home this weekend against NSIC North Division leader Northern State University Friday at 6 p.m. and MSU Moorhead on Saturday at 4 p.m. SCSU currently trails Northern State University by 4 games in the standings (NSU is 10-2 in the NSIC) and leads MSU Moorhead by a mere one game.
