KVSC 88.1FM’s news and sports departments were recipients of several awards at the Midwest Journalism Conference held March 28 in Bloomington, Minnesota.  The recognition came from the Minnesota Associated Press Broadcasters.

KVSC is St. Cloud State University’s student-run educational and community radio station.  Student reporters compete against broadcasters throughout Minnesota (both commercial and non-commercial) in the radio class-one category.  The category is designed for stations with one or no full-time newsroom employees.  KVSC broadcasts eight weekday newscasts and more than 60 SCSU sporting events in an academic year.

A highlight of the evening was the Lone Ranger Award given to Samrat Kharel, KVSC’s news director. The award recognizes news directors who go above and beyond the call of duty in smaller newsrooms in Minnesota.

Student Reporters Win Nine Associated Press Awards

KVSC 88.1FM's news and sports departments will take home nine Minnesota Associated Press Awards at the state-wide conference on Friday, April 20, 2001 in Bloomington.

KVSC is St. Cloud State University's student-run educational and community radio station. Student reporters compete against Minnesota commercial broadcasters in the radio class-one category, which is designed for stations with one or no full-time newsroom employees.

First Place--Radio Class One
Spot News "Pamphlet" Amy Dahlin-News Director A story about neo nazi pamphlets left on students' and community members cars in St. Cloud last summer. The story included reaction from students revolted by the racist/anti-semetic message.

Honorable Mention:--Gas Explosion
A story put together by the KVSC news department on the December 11, 1998 gas explosion that killed 4 people in St. Cloud and injured dozens of others.

First Place-Sports Play By Play
SCSU Hockey-Chris Withers talent KVSC's play by play commercial-free coverage of SCSU's Divsion I hockey program beat out competition from commerical stations!

Honorable Mention-Sports Reporting
Husky Sports Friday-Ron Johnson-sports director This program is featured at 4:30pm every Friday during the school year. The sports department covers all SCSU sports with player and coach interviews.
