Fall Salutations KVSC members, September 15, 2009
KVSC has returned to its beautiful home on the banks of the Mississippi River after a summer pilgrimage to the tallest building between Minneapolis and Fargo. The phrase “there’s no place like home” certainly rings true for Your Sound Alternative. If you had not heard, our studios, music library and offices had to be completely vacated for about five weeks to abate water backup issues in our building at SCSU. Our volunteers and staff (including the Central Minnesota Audio Newspapers/State Services for the Blind volunteers) are amazing people; we pulled it off without any significant hiccups…and we endured only one tornado warning while we called the 13th floor of Sherburne Residence Hall our home.
Aside from the move to the “penthouse” of St. Cloud, the station launched its new website this summer. We’re excited to share updated news, sports and music content and podcasts at KVSC.org. You can click on the aforementioned links to get the latest details or subscribe to RSS feeds to receive updates as posted. The site is quite comprehensive and it is just the start of where we hope to grow the online presence of 88.1FM. The re-launch was supported with funds from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and developed with a local company. In other electronic news, you can sign up to follow KVSC tweets on Twitter. The process to join and find the station is on our main page. Twitter is a tool we use to share brief updates on winning concert tickets, special programs/interviews and station news.
So, have you made any plans for November 14-15? KVSC is a promotional partner of the East Meets West Dryland Championship Sled Dog Races at Warner County Park near Clearwater, MN. Dryland Sled races use a variety of rigs, scooters and bikejors for the competition. The event is free; the races start at 10 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday. You can meet the world-class mushers, their dogs and watch the fast and exciting races on both days. To learn about this event visit this site, www.isdra-dryland-racing.info. KVSC has a goal to broadcast some of the races on the air—we think this will be a radio first in St. Cloud!

KVSC is celebrating its 18th year of Monday Night Live (MNL) as it returns for the fall season. MNL is finally legal and we have an eclectic line-up of Minnesota/North Dakota artists to entertain lovers of homegrown music. The program is simulcast on UTVS-channel 21 in St. Cloud. The best audio quality is on 88.1FM, so listen to it via your tuner and watch it on UTVS. As MNL enters adulthood and exercises its right to vote and go to ‘R’ rated movies come along for the ride. The station recently revealed the theme of its 31st annual trivia weekend. Trivia in 3-D is broadcasting for 50 consecutive hours from Friday, February 12 to Sunday, February 14, 2010. KMSU-Mankato is planning to simulcast the entire contest once again, and more stations have expressed interest in our winter trivia shindig. We promise a polarizing amount of multi-dimensional trickery manipulating players and volunteers’ visual and physical perceptions. So, don those red-green spectacles and take a multi-dimensional journey with 88.1FM. Volunteer and team registrations start on December 15.
This year has been one of re-building and significant steps forward for KVSC. We expect the station to continue to offer broadcast opportunities for students and the community (free training is available) as well as growth in our arts and cultural programming. Soon we will feature consistent overnight national programming and we are developing new partnerships to bring you programming that is relevant to Central Minnesota. Thank you for your membership in Your Sound Alternative. Please contact myself or any other staff member with any questions or comments.
Best,
Jo McMullen-Boyer
