Lake George Project to be Complete by Spring

A downtown revitalization project four years in the making is near completion. The $8.5 million dollar Lake George development project, which started in 2006, will likely be complete in the spring. The new Lake George will include fishing piers, a renovated warming house, increased lighting, boardwalks, running paths, a granite water fountain, and an aquatic park with a splash pad, shallow pool and natural creek. St. Cloud Parks Director Scott Zlotnik says the public is going to be very impressed with the new-and-improved Lake George.

"I think it'll be well-received. It's been out there for quite a long time. We've received nothing but positive comments from citizens and local neighborhood groups that have partcipated. Once it's all completed I think it'll be the gateway to our downtown. It'll be the epicenter of our community. What an asset to have a lake right in our backyard of St. Cloud. We're the land of 10,000 lakes. There's not many communities that can say they have such a resource right out their front doorstep,” said Zlotnik.

The Lake George project is funded by public and private partnerships including the city of St. Cloud and the Rotary Club.

The rain that fell on Labor Day is the most we’ve seen in over a week. A total of 1.57 inches fell in St. Cloud between Monday and Tuesday morning. Most of that rain fell between 6:00 and 7:00 Monday night, according to SCSU Meteorology Professor Bob Weisman. Just seven days into the month of September, St. Cloud has already picked up more rain than the historic average for the entire month. St. Cloud has already received more than three and a half inches of rain this month. The normal for September is 2.93 inches. Weisman says the next batch of showers will reach central Minnesota Thursday night or possibly Friday.

SCSU Recommends Eight Programs to be Cut

Eight more majors, minors and pre-professional programs at St. Cloud State are in jeopardy of being discontinued. The university recently completed its second phase review of academic programs amid the state’s considerable budget deficit. In an email sent to faculty and staff, SCSU Provost Devinder Malhotra put the rumors to rest about what additional programs might be dropped, and announced the university’s official recommendations.

The recommendations call for a discontinuation or reduction of eight programs at St. Cloud State, including undergraduate programs in Applied Computer Science, Aviation, and General Biology and master’s programs in College Counseling and Student Development, Computer Science, Geography and History. Malhotra says, for the programs that do end up getting cut, students already enrolled will be grandfathered in, but those programs will stop accepting new admissions.

These are only recommendations. SCSU President Earl Potter will make the final call later in the semester. Between now and then, the University is hosting two open meetings where students, faculty and staff can voice their opinions on the future of St. Cloud State’s academic structure. Those meetings will take place Wednesday, September 8th from 2-4 pm in the Atwood Ballroom, as well as Thursday, September 9th from 10 am to 12 pm in the Atwood Cascade Room.

Last semester, it was announced that 26 programs would be cut from the St. Cloud State academic catalog.
